이더리움과 기관의 미래: 비전, 트레이드오프, 그리고 실행
Ethereum Korea One: Genesis · Day 1 · 2026-09-28 · 15:58
In a fireside chat at Ethereum Korea One: Genesis, Ethereum co-founder and MetaMask Chairman and CEO Joe Lubin discusses the vision for Ethereum's institutional era and the work needed to get there.

세션 소개
The session covers the restructuring of the Ethereum Foundation (EF) and the three new organizations it spawned, bottlenecks to institutional adoption, the direction of US regulation, and how public and private chains relate. Hear Joe Lubin's view on which institutional transactions should settle on public Ethereum and which belong on permissioned chains.
핵심 요약
- Joe Lubin recalled that after the global financial crisis, the system felt like it carried too much debt. Bitcoin invented decentralized trust, but the technology was narrow and made it hard to build anything meaningful on top. Lubin met Vitalik Buterin in early 2014, felt that decentralized trust "should be applied to everything," and joined Ethereum. Consensys was founded by Lubin about six months before the network launched.
- The EF took a minimalist approach for a while, but as the world grew more complex with AI, geopolitical complications, and rising debt, it narrowed its focus to cypherpunk principles and CROPS (censorship resistance, open source, privacy, security). In response, ecosystem contributors including BitMine, SharpLink, and Joe Lubin pooled funding for ETH Labs, Ethereum Institutional, and EthSystems, which Lubin called "the summer of Ethereum love."
- ETH Labs focuses on broader institutional and retail adoption. Ethereum Institutional acts as a neutral front door and help desk that guides institutions to the right providers in the ecosystem. EthSystems focuses on privacy in institutional development. Joe Lubin said these three represent the decentralization of how the Ethereum ecosystem is run.
- Lubin named institutional readiness, regulatory certainty, and the availability and maturity of the technology as the bottlenecks to institutional adoption, and judged that all of them are now arriving at the right level and time. Lubin added that many countries are moving carefully so as not to get ahead of the US.
- Lubin said the failure of the CLARITY Act in the US Congress was welcome because it was "a political construct." The SEC and CFTC, which have built a framework through no-action letters and other tools, are expected to produce rulemaking on AMMs, stablecoins, and fundraising that the ecosystem will welcome. Codification in legislation is hoped for, but Lubin believes that once capital floods in, it will be hard to reverse, as with Uber.
- Whether a transaction goes on a public or private chain is the institution's choice, according to Lubin. Synchronous composability, pioneered by Consensys and others (using real-time proving and aggregated zero-knowledge proofs), can execute transactions across Ethereum L1, Linea, and private permissioned chains built on Besu simultaneously in one atomic context, without third-party bridges. About 35 private permissioned networks are built on Besu, though Lubin added that valuable tokens are better issued on Ethereum L1.
